THE SMELL of DEATH
 by
Stan Almendro

             Ezekiel Chapter 37 verses 1 to 5:
• Verse 1 The hand of the Lord was upon me, and carried me out in the Spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones.
• Verse 2 and caused me to pass by them round about: and behold, there were very many in the open valley: and Lo, they were very dry.
• Verse 3 And He said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord God, thou knowest.
• Verse 4 Again He said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the Word of the Lord.
• Verse 5 Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones; Behold I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye SHALL LIVE

Your first reaction might be one of ghastly disgust as you might mutter “What a Topic”? Well I would feel somewhat disappointed if the title did not get a reaction albeit one of surprise or even disgust.

While riding to work one morning this week, my heart ever searching for an article for this column (And just thoughts for the day) was horrified when this title pounded in my heart. The more I thought about it the more inspired I felt to see what develops from the title. I bounced the title off June (My wife) and she in adding her wisdom said that the
“Smell of Death in our world should be attributed to the STENCH of Death in our Churches”.

Walk with me a while as we visit the “Valley of Bones” (Your Church).

While reading this article do remember the portion in the Bible where Jesus took a whip and cleaned out the temple. Try and identify if our churches qualify for such a visitation and a cleaning?

Please also bear in mind that if we want to get rid of the spider webs we need to kill or deal with the spider. The issues of death that we will touch on in the church are the webs BUT what and who is the spider?

Is there any hope that our preachers (The Spiders?) will possess the spirituality and insight to recognise this disastrous condition and clean out the temple and once again cause the bones to live?

I personally do not think so and what I believe is that God will need to come down and perform a wondrous work (In our churches) which could and most probably will have a long list of casualties as preachers who will not hear duck for cover and pursue their own agenda. There will be those sincere hearts among preachers that will submit to God (Not the NEW thing they are all searching for) and be part of bringing us all back to God where we hear Him say “This is the Way, Walk ye in it”

To illustrate the reality of the title and the condition we find ourselves in allow me to show you the issues:

1. The condition outside the church which “Smells of Death”
2. The state within the Church which is the “Stench of Death”
1. Outside the Church:
• Immorality has become the accepted norm
• Homosexuality and Lesbianism now an accepted lifestyle with churches marrying the couples. It will not be long before some Dynamic Charismatic preacher ( Who Knows it might be Uncle Ray who makes this a first) gets a word from God they we can have a GAY preacher.
• Our leaders raping women, committing fraud, taking bribes and getting away with it.
• The waywardness of our precious youth and younger children.
• The lack of respect for life

And so the list can go on and on. You can choose to call me and an article of this nature to be negative and this is always going to be your democratic right (A principle that has created havoc and is permitting all the permissiveness in a world desperately in need of help)

2. Stench of Death inside the Church.

• Firstly what ever we have mentioned above as the smell of death in the world is alive and doing well in our churches. The sad thing is that it is also becoming acceptable as preachers not only make money out of the “Cause of God” but also fail to address the issues in a Biblical and Godly manner.
• While the world and Christians are dying and the stench of death reaching nauseating proportions our preachers are getting visions to: Change the name of the church and this is confirmed by God; plead for money on every occasion; place a price on every event and function which then caters for those that can afford it (Or do it on credit) locking out the poor and needy.
• We are not being challenged to a closer walk with God and people are joining church as just another club with no life changing experience.
• Again you and I can add to this list and our preachers will label us as negative or out of submission missing the new thing that God (Poor God getting the blame) is doing. None of these visions or new things dreamed up is having a lasting effect in our lives but we go from one into the next believing that this is the Plan of God”

Well we have spent enough time in the valley of Bones” and only God knows if and when these bones can live again.

One thing is sure and that is from the Heart of God He sends us this message:

• Verse 5 Thus saith the Lord God unto these bones; Behold I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye SHALL LIVE

If you are a preacher entangled in the web of evil and have promoted and allowed this all to happen then have the “GUTS” to acknowledge your guilt and ask God for forgiveness and that Godly sorrow that works repentance (A turning away from). Start a new life for yourself, your family and the people of God. He will restore the years that the locusts have eaten.

If you are a victim inside or outside the church then take heart because God is going to Breath Life into the Dead Bones and the Valley (Our churches and our personal lives) will be a Valley of Life. Have an expectation to meet with God in what he will do to restore the church. Stop looking for a new thing which is an evil of the modern church and society AND rather have a readiness to submit to the REAL THING that God will bring about. We are presently conditioned to believe that all this rubbish in the church is of God so do be aware and ask God to protect you and to help you recognise it when He performs His act of mercy in the church.

BEING YOURSELF by Giselle Visser

Being yourself is celebrating you, as an individual and being able to express yourself but most importantly to be happy and content with who you are.  For some people, it's learning to love yourself, for others, it's not hiding who you are, and for some it means to discover your talent use it and excel to what you know you can achieve and become.  Being comfortable with who you are and what you like and not chancing things about you to fit in.
GiselleYou can't be yourself if you don't know, understand, and accept yourself first.  Stop caring about how people perceive you and always be open and honest with others and yourself.  Believe in who you are by developing and expressing your individuality.  There's a big difference between being you and being rude. You might have your opinions, dreams, and preferences, but so does everyone else.

Respect yourself first then you will be able and willing to respect other’s opinions and dreams, and remember there is also a difference between being critical and being honest; learn to watch the way you say things to yourself and others when being honest.
It is important to be yourself.  You were created for a purpose and you need to discover your unique purpose.  All of us have something special, unique and meaningful we need to use or give in order to complete the perfect picture called life.  This poem by an anonymous writer describes how we all form part of this beautiful drawing called life.

While walking in a toy store
The day before today,
I overheard a Crayon Box
With many things to say.
"I don't like red!" said Yellow.
And Green said, "Nor do I!
And no one here likes Orange,
But no one knows quite why."
"We are a box of crayons
that really doesn't get along,"
Said Blue to all the others.
"Something here is wrong!
Well, I bought that box of crayons
And took it home with me
And laid out all the crayons
So the crayons could all see
They watched me as I colored
With Red and Blue and Green
And Black and White and Orange
And every color in between
They watched as Green became the grass
And Blue became the sky.
The Yellow sun was shining bright
On White clouds drifting by.
Colors changing as they touched,
Becoming something new.
They watched me as I colored.
They watched till I was through.
And when I'd finally finished,
I began to walk away.
And as I did the Crayon box
Had something more to say...
"I do like Red!" said the Yellow
And Green said, "So do I!
And Blue you are terrific!
So high up in the sky."
We are a Box of Crayons
Each of us unique,
But when we get together
Only then the picture is complete.

Joy & laughter, kindness & love, peace & happiness and even your sorrow & pain, troubles & worries all form part of who you are.  Being yourself is the best gift you can give to others and by being who you are makes you very special.

Best wished
Giselle

PRIDE IS PAIN

Except by the grace of God, Sylvia would have been a dead person by now. Such a fine created lass she was; born without any deformation of any kind; she had seen the situation of other people that lacked her grace as cursed ones. And so she would not allow anything that would bring her in contact with them.
She does not hide her feelings about this at all. She used to tell her friends that she hates to see the blind and the cripples around her. And that was the same opinion she had about the dumb, the deaf, the lepers, and the rest of them. Nothing on earth had her friends failed to tell her that such people were normal people like her, but she would not accept that. Anytime her friends were on a mission to visit the less-privileged, she would dodge from them. She would find herself a pleasure that would keep her busy until when they would be back. And when they would be back, she would wait until they had their bathes before she would meet them.
She was the only girl among the boarding students that had that feeling. Every other girl had compassion and open heart towards the poor. They used to go to visit them on every good-Friday of every year, and in some special occasions when there was celebrations, to give them alms. They had developed good relationship with most of them in the course of doing that. And those ones they had developed good relationship with used to visit the school sometimes on their way going begging to see if there could be anything they could get from them. It used to be a happy time each time any of such ones visited. They would joke and laugh and at the end, such one would leave with his or her hands filled with gifts from the students. But Sylvia would not be happy seeing that happening. She would fill her heart with bitterness throughout the time the stay of such one would last, and when he or she would go, it would be troubles all over the places between her and the rest of the girls. She would want them to sweep the whole places and scrub the floor where the feet of the poor visitors had touched. Sometimes the girls would obey her just to let peace be, and in some other times, it would be fight that would settle it. And after they must have gone to receive the punishment of fighting from the school disciplinarian, and Sylvia promising that she would not do anything like that again, she would still go back to it once another situation like that came up another day.
It had become what she was known with in the whole school. Even some of the poor beggars had started to notice her difference from the other girls through the way she talked to them and her mood each time they had visited. But that was not important to them. In as much as there were other girls that liked to see them around, they would not stop coming.
They continued coming, ignoring the face of Sylvia as much as they could, enjoying the company of the other girls and the gifts from them.
Sylvia continued to endure whatever it was that always kept her unhappy anytime she saw the less-privileged to a certain day in her senior secondary class two. By that time, she was a big girl by the standard of the school – that is what they called the girls in the two last classes of Secondary School in the school. The pride of that height had begun to swell her head, together with the exuberance of her young adolescence, and of course the fact that she came from a very rich family. All these had combined to make her conduct very unbearable in the midst of the other students.
In that particular day, one of those poor begging visitor had came and gone, with the students attending to him liberally to the detestation of Sylvia. She had walked up boldly to one of the girls that attended to the man, a girl in a lower class from her own, after the man had left, to press down a warning against bringing in dirty beggars into the school premises to her. The manner with which she approached the girl and the commanding tone of her words had angered the girl into using irritating words on her. And being conscious of her seniority to the girl had immediately given her the boldness to slap the girl hard on the face, and a fight started immediately between them. All the students gathered to watch, and like a well planned thing, none of them want to separate the fight. Even when the sister of the other girl, a girl as old as Sylvia herself, came out and joined the fight, nobody did anything. They stood and watched as two of them turned her into a punching bag, tearing her apart without mercy. They hit and punched her from all angles, using anything they could lay their hands on. Sylvia was obviously not a match for them. She was only crying and using her hands to cover some parts of her body from their raining punches all over her. It was as those punches and club-hits rained on her that one came straight and landed on her right eye and blocked her sight with thick darkness and she fell down prostrate on the ground, shouting her eye with a very agonizing tone. That immediately put fear in the watching students and they stopped the girls from hitting her further. But a serious harm had already been done on her, unknown to the students.
Sylvia was gathered like pieces and was taken to the school clinic for treatment by the students, who did not even know what had happened to her. All the while they were going, her hands did not leave her right eye, and her cry was growing louder and sadder until they reached the clinic. What the nurse at the clinic saw on examining the eye told her that the situation was more than what they could handle at the school clinic with the little equipment they had there, and she recommended that she should be taken to a bigger hospital in the town. That was immediately followed through the help of everybody in the school, and she was taken to the general hospital in the town.
The report that came shortly from the doctor at the general hospital, immediately she was taken in for examination, confirmed the fear of the nurse at the school clinic. The doctor said that her right eye had been permanently blinded by the force of the punch that landed on it in the course of the fight. There was nothing anybody could do. Her parents only came and made fuss at first and later calmed down. The two girls and their parents only said that they were sorry. The school authority promised that such a thing would not happen again. The doctor could only manage to reduce the pain and treat the wound. Everybody agreed that it was the handwork of Satan, and the rest was left for Sylvia to suffer alone.
What an unhappy girl she is today, managing her life with only one eye – someone created whole and healthy by God, only to tear herself apart with her pride and air.

Chapter one Promotions

Welcome to Chapter One Promotions latest news bulletin. As always we've been extremely busy organizing our competitions and workshops that will appeal to you.

We have a new judge for our Poetry Competition, a few workshops to add to your diary, the results from our International Short Story Competition and finally an appearance on one or two social websites!

Let us know if there are any events that you would like us to consider and keep us informed on all your writing successes.
International Short Story Competition

Firstly, we’d like to send our congratulations to Dan Purdue who won first prize in this year's International Short Story Competition with his story, 'Us: A Retrospective', followed closely by Dorothy Schwarz with her tale, 'Requiem For Lisa' and in third place, 'Who Dares Moves' by Makhosazana Mguni.
Tom Chalmers from the Legend Press publishing company was thrilled to have judged the competition and was enthused by the many diverse entries received.  The stories entered were from all over the world and touched on many subjects, themes and emotions which were generally handled well.  As always it was a close decision and an exciting one for both the winners and the runners up. Poetry CompetitionMany thanks for the submissions received for our annual Poetry Competition.  For those of you who would like to present us with your poetry then there is still time to enter before the deadline at midnight on Tuesday 1 June 2010.

As always, we are on the look out for original and unpublished poems that vividly portrays a moment in time, evokes hidden emotions or just plain entertains. The form and content of the poem is completely open allowing you to tap into your creative resourcefulness without being hindered by restrictive form or style.  We only ask that the poem be no more than 30 lines in length.

This year's judge is the renowned poet Steve Tasane.  A man of many words, Steve will have the challenging task of selecting the top twenty poems which will then be displayed on our website.  The public will then vote for their favorite poem thus determining the top three winners.

The prizes on offer are £1000 for the first placed winner, £500 for the second position and £250 for the third most popular poem.  Plus one lucky voter picked at random will win £100! Online voting takes place from 1-15 July
The entry fee is £5 for each poem, and submissions can be paid for, as well as sent, online or send us your entry by post.
Pitch Your Novel Event
The Pitch Event, as we fondly call it, will take place on Saturday 19 June with Lorella Belli from the Lorella Belli Literary Agency, Tom Chalmers from Legend Press and Kate Nash from the Kate Nash Literary Agency on the panel. This is a great opportunity to receive first hand comments from agents and publishers on your manuscript and to find out what is currently being commissioned, what agents and publishers look for in new writing talent and how best to approach them and their peers.

The fee to attend the workshop is £60 or £35 concessionary rate. We would advise early bookings as spaces go extremely quickly for this event.
Children's Story Competition and Young Illustrator's Competition

Entries are still accepted for the Children’s Story Competition and the Young Illustrator’s Competition.  The top prizes are £150, £75 and £50 plus the winner of the Young Illustrator’s Competition will grace the front cover of the Children’s Story Book as well as the winners and runners up in each age category.  Children from the ages of 7 to 18 years old can submit their stories online or by post.  Only drawings and illustrations to be sent in to us by post please.

The entry fee is £5 per submission and the deadline is at midnight on Sunday 31 October 2010.

Upcoming Workshops
Writing for Television WorkshopNew to our regular diverse range of workshops is the Writing for Television workshop on Saturday 22 May. Yet again, another grand opportunity to learn about how to write treatments for TV programmes, work on dialogue, structure and character and study all aspects of successful television scripts.

Fees for this one day event is £60/£45 conc.
  Children’s Story Pitch Event

Our Children’s Story Pitch Event is scheduled for Saturday 25 September.  Like our Pitch Event, this will be the chance to talk face to face with agents and publishers in the children’s story market and to literally ‘pitch’ your story or manuscript idea to them.  Not only will the panel lists have the opportunity to respond candidly to your proposal, but they will be able to give feedback and notes on what they’ve heard and can give grass root tips and information on what is out there and who’s searching for what.

The fee for attending this workshop is £60/£35 conc.

Three new workshops of interest will take place over the next few months, all based on poetry.  The Human Writes Workshop will delve into the works and interpretations of poets from home and abroad, understanding the intricate nature of writing as a second language and how words influence us differently under conflict.  This workshop, run by Baden Prince Junior, will be held on 20 November.

Steve Tasane will be running a comic poetry workshop in July that will allow you to dissect and discuss some of the classics and to try your hand at creating a comic masterpiece during the day.

In October we will also be looking closely at the finer details of writing poetry that is memorable.  Using past masters as a starting point, you’ll be producing poetry with the delicate balance of winning prose and strong definition.

Booking is essential for all our workshops. Do send us your cheque or postal order to secure your place and a confirmation letter will be promptly sent out to you.
And finally....Phew! I think we’ve exhausted all new opportunities for now.  Look out for the next e-bulletin in September which will talk about the results from both the Poetry Competition and the Novel Competition and other little things of interest.Remember….

You can now follow us on Face book and Twitter for immediate news on competitions, workshops and events. This is new for us, so your input will be of value, and as we grow we’d like you to be a part of our growth and to join us on our journey.
